In our pursuit of a simple life, ordered around Jesus and his priorities, distractions and duties abound and they leave us feeling a little like Martha in this passage: “worried and upset about many things”. Our natural tendency is to allow our schedule to be commandeered by the seemingly urgent matters that have captivated us. But the words of Jesus to Martha pierce through our preoccupation and offer us a new and better way to prioritize our lives: “few things are needed—or indeed only one.” We want to be people who order our lives, and specifically our schedules, around the only One who is really needed.
